5 Ways to Become a Better Runner
- Have a plan - Whether your aim is simply to finish your first proper race or smash your marathon personal best, you need a plan or else you run the risk of getting nowhere fast. Attempt to run every other day and your mind, as well as your body, will soon form a routine.
- Get an MOT - Before starting a new plan, especially if you’re new to running or coming back from an absence or injury, it’s worth getting a once-over to iron out any niggles or fix any other potential problems. Schedule an appointment with a physio or sports masseur who will be able to highlight any weaknesses, stiffness or imbalances.
- Don’t delay refuelling - While running in a fasted state can offer many performance benefits, it means refuelling correctly immediately after your run is even more important. Your post-run meal will aid recover, so it’s vital to eat a proper meal containing carbs and a good source of protein.
- Invest in the right footwear – Having the right trainers is vital when becoming a regular runner. Consider where you’re going to be running and buy shoes that will be suitable for the terrain. Many specialist footwear stores are now able to give you a full assessment prior to your purchase, to ensure the trainers you buy are correctly fitted to your feet.
- Give yourself time - The key to becoming a better runner, whatever your distance, is consistency. You have to allow yourself time to adapt to your new running routine and let your body develop. Within the first few weeks, changes will be visible. After several months, the difference can be incomparable.
