The Rules
Eroica Britannia Important Update: Due to a number of logistical and supply chain challenges, Eroica Britannia, due to take place on 6-7 August 2022, has been postponed until 2023.
Authenticity is vital to Eroica Britannia Sunday rides across the South Downs. By following a few rules, every rider can contribute to making the ride outs a celebration of classic and vintage cycling culture.
We have thousands of riders taking part in The Great British Adventure and everyone contributes to the atmosphere and ethos of the event. So we do require you to check out the pre-1987 rules.
While we do make exceptions we ask you to come on the journey with us. Make the effort and play your part.
1. The 100-mile route is intended for pre-1987 road racing bikes both with gears and single-speeds. Modern carbon racing bikes are strictly forbidden.
2. Reproduction bikes are also permitted if they have a vintage look and characteristic, assembled using vintage components or replicated parts similar to the original. Strictly no mountain bikes or modern racing bikes.
3. Authentic classic bikes such as such as Pashleys, Moultons and Bromptons can enter all three routes. Other bikes such as military, postman and delivery bikes are allowed for the 20- and 60-mile routes.
4. Gear shifters should be on the downtube with the exception of Sturmey Archer-style gearing. Modern day integrated gear shifting within the brake levers is not allowed.
5. Pedals should have toe clips and straps. Quick release pedals are not permitted. While training shoes are not banned they are not in keeping with the ethos of the event.
6. Brake cables must pass outside the handlebars but other cables can pass inside the frame.
7. Both tubular and clinchers with inner tubes are allowed.
8. Participants must be dressed in vintage or era-specific clothing. Lycra and modern-style clothing is not permitted. Make the effort, you'll feel better for it!
9. Helmets are advisable but not compulsory. Vintage-style helmets are available to combine safety with a look in keeping with the event.
10. There is no lower age limit for participation in The Ride, but any riders under 18 years must be registered and accompanied at all times on The Ride by a parent/guardian.
