After a fire in 1791 at Richmond House in Whitehall, London, James Wyatt added two great wings to showcase the saved collection at Goodwood. To give unity to the two new wings, Wyatt added copper-domed turrets framing each façade.

Flying training began at Goodwood in 1940 when pilots were taught operational flying techniques in Hurricanes and Spitfires.

We operate five 1940s Spitfires, including three two-seat TR9s and two Mk IXs - featuring the iconic Silver Spitfire, G-IRTY. The TR9s, converted from original Mk IXs, are used for passenger flights and training. Each is powered by a legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin V12, delivering pure wartime power.
With only 60–70 airworthy Spitfires remaining out of 22,500 built, flying in one is a rare and unforgettable honour. Each of our aircraft has wartime history, from training to active service. The two-seat Tr9s were originally Mk IXs, faithfully converted using Vickers Supermarine factory blueprints.

During WWII, Goodwood Aerodrome - then known as RAF Westhampnett - was an active fighter station, home to Spitfire squadrons that defended Britain’s skies. Today, the roar of Merlin engines still echo across the airfield as restored Spitfires return to the very runways they once flew from.
We will do everything we can to ensure that you have a great day, but we cannot influence the weather! Please contact us before you leave for the aerodrome, or the afternoon before if you have an early flight. The final weather decision will be made by your Instructor and you will of course be informed if there is any change to the plan.
There is plenty of space for friends and family to come and watch you take off and land. We do ask that children are supervised at all times.
Comfortable clothing is recommended along with enclosed footwear. Clothing made of man-made fibres such as polyester, acrylic or nylon MUST be avoided. A cotton shirt, cotton/wool jumper, jeans and/or cotton/wool trousers are ideal. Footwear such as leather shoes or boots should be worn, if possible.
