When guests visit the Goodwood Farm Shop, they discover a range of hand-crafted cheeses made using organic milk from our own dairy herd. Behind every wheel is Head Cheesemaker Sasha, whose remarkable journey into cheesemaking has taken him from the world of international finance to the heart of artisan food production.
Sasha joined Goodwood in the summer of 2025 and now oversees the production and maturation of Goodwood's cheeses. His role combines technical expertise, creativity and careful attention to detail, ensuring every cheese reflects the quality of the milk produced on the Estate and the craftsmanship that goes into transforming it.
Although Sasha's route into cheesemaking may appear unconventional, his passion for food began long before his professional career.
Growing up in Ukraine, Sasha spent much of his childhood helping his family grow fruit and vegetables and learning his way around the kitchen. This connection to food and agriculture stayed with him, later leading him to study at agricultural college.
Over the following years, Sasha worked in both New York and London, building a successful career in banking. Yet despite his professional achievements, his interest in food never faded.
While living in New York, Sasha regularly visited a renowned local cheese shop near his home. What began as curiosity soon became deep interest. He went on to attending classes, visiting cheesemakers and building an extensive collection of books dedicated to the craft.
When the opportunity arose to leave banking behind, the decision felt natural. Pursuing a career in food, and specifically cheesemaking, was something Sasha felt destined to do.
Sasha's professional cheesemaking journey began in 2018 with Daylesford Organic. Working behind the cheese counter in their Notting Hill farm shop, he developed a deep understanding of artisan cheese before moving into full-time production just a year later.
Since then, Sasha has gone on to create multiple award-winning cheeses, earn Certified Cheese Professional accreditation and establish himself within the industry as a respected voice in cheesemaking. His expertise has even led to invitations to judge at the prestigious World Cheese Awards.
Today, Sasha brings that experience to Goodwood, where he oversees every stage of the cheesemaking process, from production to maturation.
Working with organic milk produced on the Estate allows him to create cheeses that are deeply connected to Goodwood's farming heritage. Each cheese reflects not only the quality of the ingredients but also the care, patience and craftsmanship required to bring out its unique character.
As Goodwood continues to grow its food and farming offering, Sasha's expertise plays an important role in showcasing what can be achieved when exceptional produce meets skilled craftsmanship.
The next time you visit the Farm Shop, take a moment to discover the cheeses crafted under Sasha's watchful eye and experience a taste of Goodwood's commitment to quality, sustainability and great food.
