Two teams, one from Europe, one from the USA, fielded a 16 player team designed to showcase the best of disability golf from across the two continents, whether they are scratch golfers to high handicappers, the Cairns Cup represented everyone. The competition included three rounds of tournament golf, Fourballs, Foursomes & Singles.
The Shire proved to be a tough challenge with water on 14 holes and to add to the level of difficulty each tournament day was played in wet and very windy conditions. After days of close competition, the USA were crowned the champions.
Derek said: “I was honoured to be selected to play for Team Europe in all three formats against tough and talented USA competitors.
“Whilst the USA team took trophy home, Team Europe gave a magnificent account of themselves.”
The Cairns Cup has received significant support and corporate sponsorship, enabling the next four tournament locations to be scheduled in Michigan, Wales, Florida and Spain.
The ambition of all those who took part this year was to raise the profile of disability golf and promote the Cairns Cup philosophy that, ‘A disability is NOT an inability.’
A huge congratulations to all involved and we look forward to the next event in 2024 in Michigan!
