Overview

Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond was a radical, revolutionary and reformer; a politician who believed that all men over the age of twenty-one should have the vote, and who supported American Independence, owning a copy of the Declaration of Independence.

During his lifetime he earned the moniker ‘the radical Duke’. He was, in other words, not what you might expect from an 18th century aristocrat. His twin passions were politics and military affairs, but he was also curious about science and the natural world, and was a great artistic and architectural patron. Driven by enlightenment ideals, Richmond embraced innovation and change, setting him apart from many of his contemporaries.

This exhibition celebrates his fascinating life.

The Radical Duke exhibition will open Monday 3 August and close on Monday 26 October and can be viewed as part of our Afternoon Tea & Tour or Guided Tour experiences. These are available to book on select dates throughout 2026.
