Tips on Staying Active in the Heat

29th June 2026

Hot weather doesn’t have to stop you from exercising, but it does invite you to adjust approach. Higher temperatures cause the body to work harder to regulate itself, meaning what might feel manageable on a mild day feels more demanding in the heat.

A few simple adjustments can help you stay comfortable, train effectively and protect your wellbeing during warmer weather.

Our Coaching Consultant, Alex Parsons, has shared his advice on how to adapt your training approach during the warmer months.

Train at cooler times of the day:

Exercise first thing in the morning, or later in the evening, when temperatures are cooler. Plan your sessions around these times to maintain performance without strain.

Reduce the intensity:

This isn’t the season for chasing personal bests. Consider lowering your pace, reducing weights or shortening sessions. You can still stay consistent whilst training lighter.

Hydrate first:

Hydration is the key. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty, drink regularly before during and after your session.

Choose a cooler environment:

Where you train matters. Opt for indoor spaces such as the Goodwood gym, which is air conditioned, or choose shaded areas and routes that keep you out of direct sunlight.

Dress for the conditions:

Lightweight, breathable and loose-fitting clothing helps your body regulate temperate more effectively.

Allow extra recovery time:

Allow yourself the space to slow between sets. Longer rest periods give your body time to cool, supporting better form and minimising fatigue.

Listen to your body:

Pat attention to how you feel. Stop exercising you feel like it’s becoming too much stress on your body. Training should support your wellbeing, not compromise it.
