Goodwood Home Farm is one of Europe’s few self-sustaining organic farms. Its free-draining chalk soils grow spring barley and provide rich pasture for sheep and cattle. Led by Farm Manager Harry Holt, the team draws on generations of expertise to nurture healthy soils, care for their animals and farm guided by ethical and sustainable practices.
The deep-red Sussex meat cows have thrived on Goodwood’s chalk downland for centuries, grazing freely across the estate. Our Shorthorns flourish with access to our state-of-the-art robotic dairy, where they can choose to be milked in the barn at their own pace before returning to graze the surrounding pastures throughout the summer.

Both breeds of sheep have flourished on the South Downs for hundreds of years. The lambs are bred purely for their meat and graze particularly well on the chalk ground of the South Downs. Goodwood's pedigree Southdown sheep are successfully shown locally by shepherd, Nick Page, continuing a tradition long held by the Dukes of Richmond.

These hardy, outdoor pigs live on the farms grasslands and woodland. Their natural rooting habits rid the field of weeds and their waste product adds nutrients to the ground, which is subsequently sown with cereals for two years before reverting to grass.

Our commitment to organic principles begins with a traditional crop rotation system that yields a diverse range of cereals and forage. We cultivate 100 hectares of malting barley for beer alongside specialised crops like oats, vetch, and forage rye - providing our livestock with a balanced, home-grown diet.
This agricultural cycle is supported by a focus on soil health, which we view as the primary driver of quality for both plants and animals. By maintaining the integrity of the land, we honour the legacy of the 10th Duchess of Richmond and our long-standing Soil Association certification, ensuring that the vitality of our soil translates directly into the nutritional excellence of our final products.

All the latest news, stories and wonders from Home Farm.

This June, a new chapter begins at Goodwood as the estate’s new market garden starts to take root at Home Farm, with its first organic vegetables soon appearing in the Farm Shop and on menus across the estate, including Farmer, Butcher, Chef and The Kennels.

June brings a quieter rhythm to life at Goodwood Home Farm. After winter months indoors and spring calving, the estate’s cattle settle into the calm of early summer, grazing across the rolling hills of the South Downs. Across the estate, nearly 950 head of cattle, from dairy cows and beef herds to young calves, are carefully managed with animal welfare and organic farming at the heart of every decision. By June, all the cattle are out in the fields and the farm briefly settles into one of its most peaceful seasons.

I've had an unforgettable time from my thrilling lap of the circuit to seeing The Duchess' organic principles in action. This innovative family have kept their passions for sport and farming bang up to date.
